Biography

Nigel Atwell is a seasoned commercial lawyer with 20 years of experience working in Washington, D.C. and New York as in-house counsel for major telecommunications carriers, a public utility and in private practice handling complex technology, goods and services agreements.

Mr. Atwell left law practice in 2005 to become an educator.  In 2006, he obtained a Master of Arts in Elementary Education from George Washington University's Graduate School of Education and Human Development.  In 2007, Mr. Atwell began teaching in the District of Columbia Public Schools as a primary school educator, where he served for seven years.  As an educator, Mr. Atwell advocated for the adoption of best social studies teaching practices on behalf of students with disabilities and to identify and address school discipline, equity and school leadership issues.  Mr. Atwell conducted action research on boys' reading motivation and hosted teacher study groups.  Mr. Atwell was also an adjunct professor at George Washington for two semesters, where he trained graduate level, pre-service educators in social studies pedagogy, social studies curriculum and their impact on children and society.  Mr. Atwell has served on the boards of a local Montessori public charter school, a non-profit music education school and on the human rights committee for a local provider of supported living and therapeutic services for individuals with cognitive disabilities and mental illness.

In 2014, Mr. Atwell founded The Law Office of Nigel M. Atwell in Washington, D.C. to practice in the areas of education, technology, commercial and arts transactions, and estate planning.
